DA forwards motion for Telkom privatisation
The Democratic Alliance has put forward a motion in the House of Parliament for the privatisation of Telkom.
The motion was put forward by Marian Shinn MP, DA shadow minister of communications on Tuesday (6 November).
“I hereby move without notice on behalf of the Democratic Alliance that this house debates the following motion:
“The privatisation of Telkom in the interests of rapidly installing high-speed communications infrastructure to benefit the service delivery, economic growth and job creation,” Shinn said in a statement.
Government holds a 39.8% shareholding in Telkom, with state investment arm Public Investment Corporation (PIC), owning another 10.9%.
It is still unclear what government’s plans are for Telkom, with Cabinet expected to make a decision over its future after the Department of Communications submitted its proposed options for the group in September.
