The Democratic Alliance says that South Africa’s economic hub, Gauteng, is in crisis, with nearly 30%, or one in three people are unemployed.

On Monday, StatsSA said that South Africa’s unemployment rate rose to 25.2% of the labour force in the first quarter of 2014 from 24.1% in Q4.

The quarterly labour force survey found that this amounted to 5.067 million people without work in the first quarter, up from 4.83 million in the previous three months.

“Instead of creating jobs, more and more people are without work in the country’s economic hub,” the DA said ahead of election day on 7 May.

“We are now faced with a crisis where over 2 million people are unemployed in Gauteng. Nearly 30%, or 1 in 3 people, in Gauteng are unemployed,” said Helen Zille, leader of the DA.

“In contrast, where the DA governs we added 146,000 jobs to the economy – the highest contribution in SA.”

Last month, the DA said it aims to create two million ‘real’ jobs in Gauteng, should it be elected to govern in the province.

“In this election the DA has tabled a Gauteng manifesto that would make this province the job-creating powerhouse that we all need it to be.

“From capitalizing 220,000 families with title deeds for their homes, to holding a referendum on job-killing e-tolls, to support for entrepreneurs – under the DA, Gauteng will lead job creation in South Africa,” Zille said.

Nationally, the DA said its policies can create six million real, permanent jobs in South Africa.

“Jacob Zuma’s speech on Sunday showed that he has no plan to create real jobs. He talks about things that the government has already done, and which have failed.”

“He promised 5 million jobs in 2009, and today there are 1.4 million more unemployed people,” the DA lead said.
