The world’s biggest IPOs
With an initial public offering (IPO) of over $24.7 billion, Alibaba’s debut on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) is officially the largest in the world.
The title has been stolen from the Agricultural Bank of China, whose 2010 IPO of $22.1 billion on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEx) previously topped the global charts.
Demand for Alibaba’s stock when it launched on the NYSE on Friday saw the group initially raise $21.8 billion, which was subsequently extended to almost $25 billion – making it not only the largest IPO in the USA, but also the world.
Looking specifically at the States, the previous number one in the western world was global financial services corporation Visa, which debuted on the NYSE in 2008 with an IPO of $19.7 billion.
Auditing firm Ernst & Young compiled a list of the world’s largest IPOs by proceeds accrued globally, showing that China accounts for 3 of the top 5 biggest IPOs – with the US only inching in.
