Groupon SA appoints new CEO
Groupon has appointed a new country leader for its South African operation.
Emilian Popa takes the reigns from two of the founding members of the SA business, Daniel Guasco and Wayne Gosling, who are stepping down. It is unclear where the two are going.
Launched in 2010, Groupon South Africa features one daily deal on the best things to do, see, eat, and buy in a variety of cities across South Africa. It forms part of a wider, listed operation, present in 49 countries.
Popa is a founding member of Twangoo.co.za, which was acquired by Groupon.
Popa’s previous roles have included: CEO and founder at Kinderelo, CEO and founder of Style36, CEO and co-founder of 5rooms.com.
A spokesperson for Groupon said that Popa will see the company through its next phase.
Popa was also involved in building e-commerce groups including lamoda.ru (Russia), wimdu.com (Germany & China), zando.co.za (South Africa), jumia.com (Nigeria), and jabong.com (India).
In February, MIH Internet Africa (MIHIA), a subsidiary of the Naspers group, announced that it would shut down “some small businesses which are no longer core”, namely Style36, 5Rooms, Kinderelo, SA Camera and 5Ounces.
