SABC agrees to reverse censorship policy: report

SABC Please Stand By Test Pattern

The SABC has told Icasa that it will abide by the authority’s ruling that it should reverse a policy to ban showing footage of ‘violent protests’ on its news channels.

Icasa confirmed to EWN that the SABC had informed it that it would abide by the ruling.

This follows a court interdict brought by the Helen Suzman foundation which blocked the broadcaster from banning the footage.

Icasa ruled last week that the controversial policy – effectively forced on the broadcaster by COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng – should be reversed, or it would face punitive measures.

The policy drew criticism from all fronts, including the ANC, opposition parties, media houses and the SABC’s own journalists.

Eight senior editorial staff at the SABC stood opposed to the censorship policy and this week lost their jobs as a result.

Speaking after the Icasa ruling was made, Motsoeneng did not mince his words in saying the broadcaster would challenge it.

He told media that no one would tell the SABC what to do, and that the policy to ban airing footage of “violent protests” would continue.
