South African Black Friday deals you didn’t even know were happening
Black Friday may be a relatively new concept for South Africa, but it has gained traction among retailers in almost every retail and service sector in the country over the past two years.
If you look around for Black Friday deals today, it’s very likely that you will find almost every store offering some sort of discount or special price – even where you least expect it.
While retailers like Takealot, Makro and Dion Wired previously led the charge, offering discounts on popular tech products, you will now find everyone – from coffee shops to nurseries – taking part in the Black Friday craze.
Among the usual suspects, you may also find some more unexpected retailers with their own take.
With literally hundreds of specials available, you’re likely to come across some deals outside of what you’re used to and may have slipped you by – here are some of the more unusual Black Friday offerings we have seen.

Hair and wigs
If you’re looking for hair extensions or a wig at discount rates this Black Friday, Hair City has you covered. Literally.
The retailer is offering 20% off everything in store and online, with 40% off some selected items. When you consider some human hair wigs can carry a price of over R3,200, that’s no small discount.
Cycads
Not everyone is born with a green thumb, but local nursery, Cycads Unlimited, will give you a special price on cycads today.
Cycads of a specific genus can sell for thousands of rands per cm – as a special, you can pick up a Encephalartos hirsutus cycad for the low price of R48,000 – discounted from R60,000 previously.
Onesies
If you’ve ever wanted an adult onesie, but felt too proud to pick one up (“at R850? That’s crazy!”) – luckily local onesie maker, aFREAKa, is also celebrating Black Friday, with 40% off all items.
Now you can dress in your very own Springbok onesie knowing you didn’t spend too much on it. (Use the promo code: BLACKFRIDAY).
Sex toys
Not widely advertised for its illicit nature, but adult store, Adult World, is also part of the Black Friday trend, and will be offering discount on sex toys and lingerie and other sexy products up to 75%.
Pets!
Why should only humans benefit from discounts and specials? Online pet store, ePETstore is also running a Black Friday special, offering 20% off certain products – which means your furry friends can play too.
Car rental
Not something that is used every day, but if you happen to be travelling around Gauteng on Black Friday and are need of a car rental, Tempest Car Hire is also taking part, and will offer vehicle rental at R99 per day.
Terms and conditions apply.
Firearms
Gun retailer, Hailstorm, has a Black Friday special on a Strike One Tactical BLACK firearm, which is available at the special discounted price of R9,900 until Christmas – but if you buy it on 25 November, you can get it for R9,350.
If you didn’t know South Africa had its very own online gun store, now you do. The deal is only available through email or calling the store, though.
