Watch: people go crazy for Black Friday deals in SA

 ·25 Nov 2016

Images and videos of crowds going crazy for Black Friday specials in South Africa are hitting the internet – showing that consumers climbing over each other for low prices is not unique to the United States.

Black Friday is a US retail tradition that takes place after Thanksgiving every year. In the US, especially, it’s a process to clear old stock to make way for new stock ahead of the lucrative Christmas shopping season.

However, in recent years, the tradition has been imported into a number of different countries, including the UK in 2010, and South Africa in 2013.

The US sale is infamous for bringing out the worst in shoppers – where fights break out over limited stock, and sometimes even death has occurred. Since 2006, at least seven people have died during Black Friday rushes in the States, with almost 100 people injured.

And the Black Friday has spread to South Africa, with consumers eager to take part.

These images were captured from the Pick n Pay Black Friday specials, which are offering up to 50% off prices at stores across the country.
