Investment research firm, Morningstar, has released its latest analysis of South African asset managers, detailing which of the country’s top fund managers have delivered the best returns.

The analysis is designed to compare managed fund ranges across local asset managers by aggregating their Morningstar Ratings – which assigns individual funds a ranking of between one and five stars.

The research is calculated on a quarterly basis and provides an assessment of the risk-adjusted return of all South African-based unit trusts carrying a Morningstar Rating.

Morningstar stressed, however, that the ranking is not designed as a forward-looking tool – and does not indicate the future positioning of asset managers.

South Africa’s largest private asset manager, Allan Gray, topped the list of the country’s best fund managers for investment performance, showing a continued trend towards value-oriented management.

This can be seen elsewhere on the list with large year-on-year increase of managers with a similar style, while high-risk, high-reward schemes saw sharp declines, the group said.
