Court bans Malema from making land grab claims

The Pretoria High Court has barred the EFF’s Julius Malema from inciting illegal land grabs in a judgement handed down on Tuesday, 7 March.

This follows an interdict submitted by Afriforum and AfriBusiness in November 2016, which claimed that Malema should be stopped from making the claims publicly as it incited violence and was a criminal offence.

“AfriBusiness views private land ownership as one of the cornerstones of a flourishing economy that is based on the free market system,” said AfriBusiness’ Armand Greyling.

“Any threat or undermining of private land ownership will deter local and international investors and lead to the flow of capital out of the country.”

He is also facing criminal charges for encouraging supporters to invade land in violation of the Riotous Assemblies Act and is expected to go on trial in July, according to a report by eNCA.

Should Malema continue to issue public claims for the illegal distribution he could face further charges for being in contempt of court.
