10 stand-out signs and banners spotted at the anti-Zuma marches
Thousands of South African citizens are marching around the country on Friday, in protest against president Jacob Zuma’s axing of finance minister Pravin Gordhan and the subsequent junk status downgrade given by rating agency Standard and Poor’s.
While the main metros including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town are expecting the largest turn out, its clear from social media that there are dozens of smaller groups around the country that have joined in protest.
Analysts have warned that there would have to mass action across the country, with around 500,000 to a million people taking to the streets for there to be any real impact. In smaller numbers, the protest action would be seen as just blip on the political radar, as the president has already demonstrated that he is unmoved by calls for his resignation.
Early indications from those reporting on the ground is that people have come out in their thousands, with the ‘main’ march to the Union Buildings in Pretoria scheduled to start in earnest at 12 noon.
