More than a third of South Africans have a side-job – here’s what they’re doing
According to the recently released Old Mutual’s Savings and Investment Monitor, 13% of South Africans have a side-job similar to their current occupations, while 24% have an additional source of income that is completely different to their day job.
Dubbed “slashers” by Old Mutual, the report noted that this 24% is steadily increasing as South Africans look to earn additional income in an entirely separate field. Further, 53% of respondents indicated that they would actually prefer to make a career out of their side-job as opposed to their current career path.
63% of slashers indicated that they enjoy having more than one job, while 42% admitted that they don’t have time for more than one job, but financially needed the money.
According to the report, the most popular side-jobs are:
- Catering
- Event planner
- Errand runner/messenger
- Garden service
- Internet café
- Sell stationery to schools
- Nail technician
- Carpentry
- Musician
- Photographer
- Tutor
- Barber
- Installing water treatment equipment
- Selling Herbalife
- HR consultancy
- Manufacture kiddies clothing
- Party equipment
- Make costume jewellery
- Online boutique
- Bookseller
- Hiring
- Waiting
- Cash wash
- Sell “flat stomach” tea
- Grow and sell vegetables
Why?
According to the report, 63% of slashers indicated that they enjoy having more than one job, while 42% admitted that they don’t have time for more than one job, but financially needed the money. In comparison just 14% of respondents said that financially they didn’t need to have a second job.
The respondents provided the following reasons as why exactly they had decided to start up a side-job.
