New acting national consumer commissioner appointed
Minister of Trade and Industry Rob Davies has appointed a new acting national consumer commissioner, the department said on Thursday.
Davies appointed Ebrahim Mohammed, the deputy national consumer commissioner, into the new role, according to a statement issued by the department.
The appointment will bypass outgoing commissioner Mamodupi Mohlala-Mulaudzi who has battled to keep her position.
Davies had said previously that Mohlala-Mulaudzi’s contract would not be renewed.
In the statement, Davies thanked Mohlala-Mulaudzi, “for her contribution to the Commission and wished her all the best in her future endeavours”.
Mohlala-Mulaudzi joined the department’s consumer commission in 2010 as part of a settlement brokered by the department of public service and administration.
The deal followed a breakdown in the relationship between Mohlala-Mulaudzi and former communications minister Siphiwe Nyanda.
Mohlala-Mulaudzi was fired from her position as director general in Nyanda’s department.
She unsuccessfully approached the Johannesburg Labour Court earlier this month to win a renewal of her contract.
