In Twitter’s report of the year of 2012 on the social media platform, the company has highlighted the top 5 tweets of the year – be it from breaking records, or causing the biggest buzz on the Twittersphere.

Barack Obama – Four more years
After winning the 2012 presidential race, US president Barack Obama took to Twitter to mark his victory. The tweet, along with the accompanying picture, became not only the most retweeted tweet of 2012, but of all time.
Justin Bieber – Rest in peace Avalanna
6 year old Avalanna Routh was suffering from a rare type of cancer, and her only dream was to meet her idol, Justin Bieber – and her dream came true on Valentine’s day in 2012. Sadly, Avalanna passed away in September 2012, and Bieber’s tweet paying his repects to her instantly became one of the most poignant and retweeted tweets of the year.
TJ Lang – Referee blunder
The American NFL had been using replacement referees for the entire 2012 season due to a labor standoff with the referees’ union – when one of the replacement refs botch a call during a pivotal game, player TJ Lang and other football fans took to Twitter to voice their frustration. Lang’s tweet blew up across the Twittersphere, becoming the most retweeted tweet all season.
Team Great Britain – Olympic achievements
The 2012 Summer Olympics was the most talked-about topic on Twitter in 2012 – and it comes as no surprise that the tweet declaring the achievements of the host nation – Team Great Britain – generated a lot of buzz on the social network.
Kouichi Yamadera – Mr and Mrs Yamedera
Surprisingly, one of the most pupular tweets of year would have gone over the heads of most westerners. Popular Japanese anime voice over artist, Kouichi Yamadera, announced his marriage to another popular Japanese actress, Rie Tanaka, on his Twitter account – producing one of the most retweeted tweets of 2012.
