MTN Turkcell report expected soon
The Hoffman committee set up by MTN to investigate Turkcell‘s claims against it will reportedly present its findings to the MTN board in the next few months.
In March 2012, the Turkish-based telecoms firm, Turkcell filed a complaint in U.S. District Court of Columbia, Washington DC, against MTN Group, demanding $4.2 billion in damages over the award of the cellular licence in Iran in 2004.
TurkCell claimed that MTN used political and monetary lures to enhance its relationships and leverage its position within Iran.
MTN’s board of directors appointed a special committee to investigate the allegations made by Turkcell, chaired by independent jurist, Lord Leonard Hoffmann.
MTN said that it regards Turkcell’s allegations and legal tactics as “mischievous and unwarranted”, saying further that the operator would put full confidence in the Hoffman committee’s findings.
“MTN is confident that Lord Hoffmann’s report will be thorough and independent, and allow the company to draw a line under these allegations,” the operator said.
Report release
According to a report in the Sowetan, MTN spokesman, Paul Newman said that the company expects the Hoffmann report to be presented to MTN executives sometime in the next two months.
“We expect the report to be tabled before the MTN Group board during the first quarter of 2013,” he was reported as saying.
BusinessTech approached the operator for more clarity on the timelines attached to the Hoffmann commission and findings, but the operator did not give any response.
The Turkcell vs MTN court battle is currently on hold, pending a U.S. Supreme Court ruling whether the case can be heard in a US court.
