South African mobile social networking platform Mxit, has set up offices in India.

The company’s operations in the country will be headed by Indian business “Maverick”, and The Apprentice Asia contestant, Sam Rufus Nallaraj, who will fill the position of Mxit India CEO.

According to the CEO, India has over 900 million cellphones, 550 million of which are feature phones. “We can connect these two worlds with Mxit,” Nallaraj said on social social media site, Twitter.

According to Nallaraj’s personal website, he was formerly the VP at Deloitte & Touché in Hyderabad before taking up the position at Mxit.

Joining the new Mxit India CEO, Mxit chairman and former FNB CEO, Michael Jordaan was in India for the mobile platform’s launch in the country.

Jordaan joined the Mxit board in September 2013, having watched the company “with interest” for several years. In late 2013, Jordaan launched his own investment firm, MonteGray Capital, which aims to invest in disruptive technologies and disruptive business models starting in 2014.

As part of Mxit’s marketing strategy in India, Jordaan was joined by veteran South African cricketer and Indian cricket coach, Gary Kirsten, to help boost the company’s profile in the market.

Mxit remained tight-lipped on specifics surrounding the platform’s launch, declining to answer queries about its operations or strategy in the country, promising more information on Wednesday (29 January 2014).

Mxit is one of the largest social media channels in South Africa with over 7.4 million users, according to figures from World Wide Worx.
