These were the top-selling items on Takealot on Black Friday 2022
Online retail giant reported record-breaking growth on Black Friday 2022, noting that it saw a 33% jump in value sold through its Blue Dot sale.
It said that 3 million customers visited the site on the day looking for deals, with the Gross Merchandise Value (GMV) surpassing any other Black Friday in its performance history.
The group expected Black Friday to be dominated by a demand for TVs, large appliances such as washing machines and dishwashers etc., load shedding essentials (power stations, UPS), laptops, smart watches, fragrances, sports equipment as well as household essentials.
“This projection held true, with these products being amongst the first to be snapped up when the clock struck midnight,” it said.
However, the most sold item in its catalogue was actually Ballantines Finest Scotch Whiskey, which moved the most units.
The item with the highest GMV was the Hisense 58″ Smart TV, while the most valuable item sold was the Samsung 75″ Smart TV, Takealot said.

“The most orders placed by a single customer on the day was 58 orders, and the biggest single basket value was R190,179,” it said.
On top of the item trends, Takealot highlighted other “interesting check-out patterns and behaviours” on the day, including a big wave of midnight shopping happening on the day.
“Orders were also consistently strong throughout the day, with purchase peaks seen during the early morning, lunchtime and early evening,” it said.
The group also ran a 24-hour live shopping experience, which it said was a great success both operationally and in terms of the response from customers.
Through the sale, close to 10,000 South Africans joined the live shopping streams on social media, where 7,000 coupons were issued to shop booster.
In terms of the 24-hour live shopping experience, the top-selling event was for Hisense TVs, with an offer for an extra R1,000 off the already discounted price point on the Blue Dot sale.
The fastest-selling stream featured Under Armour products.
“Ultimately, Black Friday has confirmed once again that South Africans actively look for unprecedented value and deals that are customised to their lifestyle and budget, together with superior shopping experiences,” Takealot said.
Data from FNB showed that its customers spent over R3 billion on the day.
According to payment gateway PayFast, the largest single purchase made on Black Friday was for R284,625, and the largest basket was R397,317.
The average basket size was R1,255, slightly higher than in 2021, which recorded an average of R1,208 per basket. Electronics, appliances, beauty and fashion drove the bulk of sales over the bonanza discount weekend.
E-commerce activity spiked on Black Friday itself – transactions peaked between 09h00 to 10h00, with many shoppers already making purchases just after midnight, the group said
Overall, the number of transactions PayFast processed increased by 20% compared to the previous year.
