A look inside Walmart’s first store in South Africa opening this week

 ·20 Nov 2025

Global retail giant Walmart will be opening its first branded store in South Africa on Saturday, 22 November 2025, at Clearwater Mall.

Broad Media were invited to attend a preview of the store on Thursday (20 November), which offered a glimpse of what South African shoppers can expect.

While the Clearwater Mall store will be the first to open, the group is expected to open many more stores in the coming weeks and months, included a confirmed outlet at Fourways Mall.

The store marks Walmart’s first branded push into the country. The group has long had a presence in South Africa through Massmart and its Makro, Game and Builders brands.

The US retail giant first acquired 51% of Massmart in 2010, completing its acquisition of the group in 2022. The company was then delisted from the JSE.

Walmart announced plans in September 2025 to start rolling out branded stores for the first time in the country, following Massmart’s long-term struggles with brands like Game.

The new stores aim to leverage the global Walmart reputation for every day low prices.

The store’s products will include fresh and frozen foods, groceries, health and beauty items, apparel, baby products, homeware, electronics, toys, sports and outdoor equipment, and seasonal goods.

Product highlights include:

  • Crumbs and Cream Cookie Ice-Cream
  • Premium Sparta Beef steaks and roast
  • A deli with hot rotisserie chickens,
  • International aisles offering confectionery and beverages from the U.S., Dubai, and the UK,
  • Pickle-in-a-Pouch and Sour Patch Kids candy
  • Gourmet Col’Cacchio pizzas
  • Authentic VSG Italian Pasta and Frozen Meals
  • A versatile air fryer range
  • PS5 Slim and PS5 Pro
  • Hisense TVs
  • Fuggler and Labubu toys, Hot Wheels, and Bricks toys
  • Slush Puppie Range of appliances and concentrates
  • Beauty products, including Catrice and Essence ranges

The Clearwater store has roughly 3,500 square metres of trading space and employs 86 staff, led by manager Onnica Mothapo.

The grand opening will take place this coming weekend, with the store opening its doors at 08h00 on Saturday.

The group has promised special offers, competitions, and fun activities for families.
