Business Talk – Andre Nepgen on Discovery Green’s 20-year renewable energy agreement with Glencore
In this Business Talk with Michael Avery interview, the Head of Discovery Green, Andre Nepgen, discusses South Africa’s energy transition and the company’s 20-year agreements with top businesses.
Nepgen has many years of experience in the Discovery ecosystem, having started as an Actuarial Analyst at Discovery Invest Technical Marketing in 2010.
In 2014, he became the R&D Manager, and a year later, he took on the role of Executive Associate to the Group Chief Executive.
Nepgen became the Head of the Global Vitality Network in 2018, and ultimately took on his current role as Head of Discovery Green in 2023.
Discovery Green is an energy platform created by Discovery to connect local businesses to clean power generated by utility-scale renewable plants.
Nepgen holds an Honours degree in Business Science and Actuarial Science from the University of Cape Town.
The interview
In this interview, Nepgen starts by discussing the pace and scale of South Africa’s green energy transition.
He talks about Discovery Green’s 20-year agreement with top South African businesses and how it has secured long-term, price-certain energy for its clients.
They then talk about Tournee Solar Park and how it fits into Discovery Green’s strategy to deliver clean energy at scale, as well as highlighting how this could impact South Africa’s economic growth.
Nepgen also touches on the company’s agreement to supply Glencore with renewable energy and highlights the role of the private sector in shaping the national energy policy agenda.
