New directors for R179 billion company chaired by Patrice Motsepe
Harmony Gold Mining has appointed two new independent non-executive directors to its board, with effect from 15 October 2026.
The two new directors, Alwyn Pretorius and James Boardman, meet the suitable requirements to operate as independent directors, according to the company.
“The Board is satisfied that Mr Alwyn Pretorius and Mr James Boardman meet the applicable independence requirements for directors,” Harmony Gold said.
“The Board further confirms that fit and proper assessments, as contemplated in terms of the JSE Listings Requirements, have been performed in respect of both directors, and is satisfied with the outcomes thereof.”
The company’s chairman, Patrice Motsepe, said the experience of the two new directors would strengthen the business.
“Their combined experience will further strengthen the Board’s oversight capabilities and contribute to Harmony’s global competitiveness and focus on safety, operational excellence, disciplined growth and long-term value creation,” he said.
“We are pleased to welcome Alwyn and James to the Harmony Board.”
Alwyn Pretorius previously held several executive positions in Harmony Gold between 2006 and 2015, including serving as its Chief Operating Officer (COO).
He also held key positions at Newmont Corporation, the world’s largest gold-mining company with a market cap of approximately R2 trillion.
“Mr Pretorius is a former mining executive and qualified engineer with extensive international leadership experience,” Harmony Gold said.
“He held several senior leadership positions at Newmont Corporation, including Regional Senior Vice President for Africa and South America as well as Managing Director of Papua New Guinea.”
James Boardman previously worked at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) and several private capital investment firms.
Harmony Gold said his experience would provide expertise in several areas, including risk management and corporate governance.
“Mr Boardman is a Chartered Financial Analyst with experience in capital markets, private equity and corporate advisory,” the company said.
“His career includes roles at the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, Bain & Company and private capital investment firms, bringing expertise in valuation, risk management and corporate governance.”
Harmony Gold is a major player in South Africa’s mining industry, with a market cap of approximately R179 billion.
The company operates several mining sites in South Africa, including Doornkop and Mponeng in Gauteng, and Kalgold in the North West.
The group also holds international assets in both Australia and Papua New Guinea, including gold and copper mining operations.
