Iconic international name making a comeback in South Africa

One of the world’s most recognisable women’s magazine brands is making a comeback in South Africa, with Cosmopolitan set to return in early 2027 after more than six years off the shelves.

Clipping Point Publishing, in collaboration with Hearst Magazines International, has announced plans to relaunch Cosmopolitan South Africa across digital platforms, social media, and monthly print editions during February and March 2027.

Originally launched locally in 1984, Cosmopolitan built a massive following among young women through its coverage of fashion, beauty, relationships, careers, and lifestyle.

Its closure in South Africa came after the liquidation of its publishing house, Associated Media Publishing (AMP).

The collapse followed mounting pressure on the publishing industry, which was compounded by the Covid-19 pandemic and South Africa’s strict national lockdown in March 2020.

The restrictions brought print production and retail distribution to a halt, and advertising budgets contracted sharply as businesses cut spending during the economic uncertainty.

The publisher also lost revenue from events and brand activations, which had formed an important part of its business model.

These pressures accelerated its decline in traditional print media, as production and distribution costs rose and audiences increasingly moved towards digital platforms.

Now, Clipping Point Publishing is looking to re-establish the brand in a substantially different media environment.

The relaunched publication will combine original South African journalism and lifestyle content with selected stories from Cosmopolitan’s international network.

Its coverage will include fashion, beauty, wellness, careers and relationships, while focusing on the experiences, ambitions and perspectives of South African women.

Avon Middleton, publisher at Clipping Point Publishing, said the return formed part of a broader expansion strategy for the company.

“Bringing Cosmopolitan back to South Africa marks a significant step in our growth strategy. Together with TopGear South Africa, it strengthens our portfolio of globally recognised brands and broadens our reach into new audiences and markets,” he said.

“Importantly, this relaunch represents the first of several planned expansions over the next year.”

What to expect

Middleton added that the expansion was intended to create employment and opportunities for local creative and media professionals, while introducing a different approach to publishing.

“We want that growth to mean something. New jobs, new opportunities for South African creative and media talent, and a fresh approach to publishing,” he said.

Clipping Point Publishing believes its experience operating TopGear South Africa will provide a foundation for the relaunch, although Middleton said the company intended to rethink how the magazine connects with audiences and generates commercial value.

“Cosmopolitan is celebrated around the world for building community with and inspiring Millennial and Gen Z women through delightful features and expert insight that serve their daily lives,” said Kim St. Clair Bodden, senior vice-president and editorial and brand director of Hearst Magazines International.

“We are thrilled to build upon Cosmopolitan’s global legacy as we reintroduce the iconic brand to the young women of South Africa in partnership with Clipping Point Publishing.”

Founded in 2014, Clipping Point operates across media, content production and publishing. Its existing publishing portfolio includes TopGear South Africa, with Cosmopolitan becoming its latest major addition.

Since 1965, it has established itself as an international publication covering relationships and the issues affecting young women. In addition to its US flagship, the brand publishes 21 international editions.

The editorial leadership team for the new South African edition has not yet been announced, but Clipping Point said further details would be communicated in due course.
