Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko has been accused of “unlawfully driving a car with falsified license plates and deceiving law enforcement agencies”.

Maseko “displayed a different car license plate to the one he was issued from February 2013 to July 2014 and incurred traffic fines of 18,000 rand in someone else’s name” according to a report on Bloomberg.

This information comes from court document which Bloomberg obtained from the Wynberg Magistrate’s court in Johannesburg.

Maseko appeared in court in Johannesburg on 3 July 2015, and has denied any intention to defraud any person or organisation.

According to the charge sheet of “The State versus Sipho Maseko”, the Telkom CEO is charged with three things:

  • Count 1: Fraud
  • Count 2: Unlawful acts in relation to number plates, registration number, registration mark or certain documents
  • Count 3: Falsify or counterfeit a number plate with intent to deceive the law enforcement agencies.

Maseko denies allegations

In an email to staff, Maseko said that he previously felt extremely frustrated by the lack of clarity regarding the claims which meant he was unable to resolve them.

“Having now received full discovery of the allegations being made, I am finally in a position to study the detail and will respond accordingly,” said Maseko.

“The three charges all relate to the license plate, one of fraud and two others related to the Road Traffic Act,” he said.

“I want you to know that I vehemently deny any intention to defraud any person or organisation. All necessary representations will be made to progress this matter.”

Maseko said that he will continue to fully cooperate with the authorities so this matter may be correctly resolved.
