FNB now sells mobile phone accessories
FNB has announced that it has started selling smart device accessories, a move which will add to speculation that the bank has ambitions on becoming a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO).
FNB, which has seven dotFNB branches located in three provinces, says its accessory offering includes a range of covers, screen protectors, chargers, and WiFi routers that can be used in conjunction with the FNB Connect data offering for customers who have ADSL lines.
Industry speculation suggests that FNB is in discussions with Cell C to become an MVNO with the aim of offering a range of mobile products to its banking customers.
Earlier this month, FNB said its had sold more than 175,000 smart devices since October 2011.
“dotFNB serves as the space where the FNB digital ecosystem becomes tangible. Customers can now bank, receive tutorials on the use of FNB digital banking channels, buy smart devices and the accessories to match,” said Kim Gibson-Van der Walt, head of dotFNB.
The bank noted that the market for mobile device accessories are set to reach US$84.6 billion by the year 2018, as smart devices become more attainable.
