All the bank branches where you can get your Smart ID and passport

 ·19 May 2023

Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi says that his department is working hard to tackle the problem of long queues at offices across the country.

Debating the department’s 2023/24 budget vote this week, the minister outlined several initiatives underway to achieve this, including the progress being made on overhauling the department’s tech and networks and the rollout of more mobile banking units to serve underserviced communities.

The minister said that the department currently has 120 of these units, with 100 more being manufactured. The goal is to purchase hundreds more of these units, he said, adding that he won’t be happy until there are over 1,000 such units in operation.

Beyond mobile units, Home Affairs has launched several other initiatives to expand its reach over the years.

Earlier this year, the group launched satellite offices in major malls across the country. It has also expressed interest in expanding its services to more bank branches.

For South African-born citizens, there are currently a total of 27 bank branches where they can renew their passports or smart IDs across the country, with many more to come.

Through the branches, South Africans are able to apply for, process and collect Smart IDs and passports, skipping the long queues and strained service levels that are often experienced at standard Home Affairs branches.

The period for the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) banking pilot was expected to end on 31 March 2023; however, according to FNB, the participating banks and the Banking Association of South Africa have now agreed to extend the pilot to September 2023.

Motsoaledi said that the department was aiming to open 43 more offices at bank branches in South Africa once the agreements were signed.

Most of the current DHA-supported bank branches favour First National Bank (FNB) and Standard Bank, which together have 16 of all DHA-supported bank locations. A breakdown is provided below:

  • Standard Bank — 9
  • FNB — 7
  • Nedbank — 5
  • Absa — 4
  • Discovery Bank — 1
  • Investec — 1

The latest bank branch to open for Home Affairs services is Standard Bank, Kathu Mall, which opened at the end of 2022.

In the meantime, the department is also expanding its branch network to stand-alone offices at malls across the country, with a branch at Menlyn Mall. This will be followed by installations at Cresta Mall in Johannesburg, Pavillion in eThekwini, and Tygervalley in Cape Town.

“Clients will now have the convenience of applying for these services when they visit the centre for their shopping,” said Motsoaledi.

Home Affairs is notorious in South Africa for its long lines and even longer wait times, and these DHA-supported bank branches show signs of its popularity.

First National Bank (FNB) recently reported that it has seen an increase in the number of customers using home affairs in bank branches for identification documents (ID) and passport applications.

In its interim results for the six months ending December 2022 on Thursday (2 March), the group reported that it had over 184,000 ID applications and 220,000 passport applications.

Bank branches at which South Africans can book to renew their passport and apply for a smart ID card are listed in the tables below.
