Amazon launches Black Friday deals for first time ever in South Africa
For the first time in South Africa, Amazon.co.za is launching an early Black Friday Sale, providing customers with access to thousands of deals throughout November.
This move positions Amazon to make a significant impact on South Africa’s Black Friday shopping scene, where the event has already grown into a substantial retail milestone.
Shoppers can access the sales using the Amazon app or through the website on mobile or desktop browsers, with new deals rolling out daily and some exclusive offers lasting just 24 hours.
The selection spans a wide variety of categories, from electronics and popular toys to kitchen gadgets, beauty products, and more.
It features international brands like Apple, Sony, and Garnier, as well as local favourites like Defy, Mellerware, and Switch Beauty.
From November 1 through December 2—including Black Friday and Cyber Monday—South African consumers can enjoy discounts of up to 50% on selected items.
This extended sales window aligns with consumer trends, as many shoppers are now starting their holiday purchases early to avoid the last-minute rush.
Robert Koen, Managing Director of Amazon Sub-Saharan Africa, highlighted that the early start is designed to give customers more time to find great deals and avoid the year-end shopping frenzy.
Black Friday has become a critical event in South African retail, with spending statistics from 2023 underscoring its popularity.
Last year, South African consumers collectively spent over R11.3 billion on Black Friday, with a substantial portion going toward electronics, clothing, and household items.
Online shopping has seen significant growth, with an increasing number of shoppers choosing digital platforms for convenience.
This surge highlights Amazon’s strategic timing, as more South Africans turn to online shopping not only for competitive prices but also for ease and accessibility.
To further streamline the shopping experience, Amazon.co.za is offering free standard delivery on eligible items shipped by Amazon, along with extended delivery hours in Johannesburg and Cape Town during this busy shopping season.
Delivery hours will stretch to 20h00, it said.
Additionally, Amazon has set up over 3,000 pickup points nationwide, providing flexible options for customers who prefer picking up packages at convenient locations.
These pickup points offer a safe and secure way for customers to collect their orders, which is particularly valuable during the high-traffic holiday shopping season.
Amazon’s returns policy allows customers to return items within 30 days through home pickup or self-drop-off options.
With the extended deals running throughout November, Amazon aims to capture a growing share of South Africa’s holiday shopping market while setting a strong foundation for future seasonal events.
