Telkom’s hugely ambitious fibre plans for SA

Telkom CEO Sipho Maseko has announced ambitious targets for the company’s fibre-to-the-home roll-out – aiming to have a million homes connected within the next three years.

Maseko, speaking at the Satnac 2015 conference held in Hermanus, said Telkom will double its investment in FTTH and fibre-to-the-business to achieve these targets.

The launch of Telkom’s FTTH followed the roll-out of multi-service access nodes in 2012, with the first FTTH services coming online at the end of 2013.

As of August 2015, there were 38,000 homes on Telkom’s FTTH network, said Maseko. By the end of 2015, they aim to have 70,000 FTTH-enabled homes.

Maseko said that by March 2016, they plan to serve 150,000 homes with fibre, expanding to 400,000 homes in 2017.
