Here are the best companies to work for in South Africa in 2018

The Top Employers Institute has released its updated list of certified top employers in South Africa, adding 15 new companies to the list of employers who provide the best environment for their employees.

Old Mutual, which was ranked as the 7th top employer in 2016/17 ascended to the top spot in South Africa for 2017/18, followed by auditing group EY Africa, and financial software giant, SAP.

The annual international research undertaken by the Top Employers Institute recognises employers that provide excellent employee conditions, nurture and develop talent throughout all levels of the organisation, and which strive to continuously optimise employment practices.

The companies are then evaluated across nine key areas: talent strategy, workforce planning, on-boarding, learning & development, performance management, leadership development, career & succession management, compensation & benefits, and culture.

It must be noted that the Top Employers certification is by application.

Billy Elliott, Top Employers Institute country manager: Africa, said that the certification provides employers with an important quality metric that enables them to position their brands more effectively in the attraction, retention and engagement of top talent.

A key trend that emerged in the recent research was that Top Employers empower employees to take ownership of their development, the group said.

“Organisations are shifting from manager-driven development plans towards empowering employees to take direct ownership of their careers and development,” said Elliott.

“What sets Africa’s Top Employers apart is a growing recognition that people development is not a top down strategy, but a partnership between the employer and the employee.”

For the 2017/18 list, 108 companies were given South African certification. In its 2016/17 certification process, 86 South African companies were given the award, up from 77 in 2015/16.

The Top Companies Institute identified the top 10 employers in the country. To be eligible for the award, participating organisations must be certified in a minimum of four African countries.

Auditng firm EY Africa was named as the top employer in Africa, having ranked as top employer in Kenya and Nigeria and ranked second in South Africa. Japan Tobacco International (JTI) ranked second on the continent, followed by telco group, Orange.
