Myeni officially out – new SAA board announced
Finance Minister Malusi Gigaba has formally confirmed the new board of South African Airways.
In an announcement released to media on Thursday Gigaba confirmed the axing of Dudu Myeni as chairperson, and stated that her replacement would be prominent businessperson Johannes Bhekumuzi Magawaza.
Magwaza is a veteran corporate executive and a respected director of several national and international companies.
He served as Personnel Director of Hulett Aluminium from 1992 to 2003 and has subsequently served as a non-executive director on a number of boards including the Nedbank group, Mutual & Federal and the Development Bank of Southern Africa.
Nolitha Fakude, currently on the board of Anglo American has been appointed the deputy chairperson and non-executive director, replacing outgoing deputy Tryphosa Romano.
The majority of non-executive directors will remain on the board but Gigaba stated that a number of additional persons have been added, including:
- Geoff Rothschild – former JSE chairperson;
- Ahmed Bassa – an aviation industry professional;
- Tinyiko Mhlari – an accountant and Armscor board member;
- Martin Kingston – the chief executive in South Africa for financial advisory firm Rothschilds.
“The new Board brings talent, expertise and energy to the airline, and they are all highly regarded individuals with a vast and in-depth knowledge of business in both the private and public sectors,” Gigaba said.
“At the heart of these appointments, is a commitment from the South African Government to strengthen the airline, and create conditions to see the transformation of all our state-owned companies”.
