Big blow for hiring activity in South Africa

Jobs portal CareerJunction has published its latest employment insights report for January 2024, showing which job skills are currently in high demand by employers in South Africa following the last three month of 2023.

The report offers an in-depth analysis of the online employment market in South Africa, focusing on the supply and demand for various occupations.

The data for the report was gathered from 5,000 of the country’s largest recruiters, agencies, and employers who advertise job positions on the CareerJunction portal.

Over the final months of 2023, there has only been a marginal uptick in recruitment activity, CareerJunction reported a decline in recruitment activity from November to December 2023 (-6%).

Year-on-year, hiring activity was even lower at -8% compared to December 2022.

“It should be noted that the December decrease in hiring activity was more significant than the seasonal trend for this time of year,” CareerJunction said.

“December 2023 showed the lowest monthly recruitment activity over the last three years.”

The jobs portal added that the monthly decrease is primarily driven by a slowdown in recruitment activity across various sectors.

The most significant hiring decreases during December were evident for roles in Finance, Business & Management, Sales, Manufacturing & Assembly as well as IT and Admin, Office & Support.

When comparing hiring activity over the last three months (October, November, December 2023) with the previous three months (July, August, September 2023), hiring activity only increased for Business & Management professionals (+5%).

Business & Management: +5%

Conversely, looking at the same period, hiring activity has slowed for professionals in several fields:

Legal: -25%

  • Drafting & Paralegal

Sales: -8%

  • Representative / Sales Consulting

Marketing: -4%

  • Brand Management

Building & Construction: -3%

  • Quantity Surveying

Regional differences

CareerJunction also reported that recruitment per province in South Africa remained static.

Month-on-month, The group said that Gauteng still offers the majority of South Africa’s job opportunities (50%) as the economic hub of the country.

Employment opportunities in the Western Cape increased by 1% in December 2023 (24%). KwaZulu-Natal hiring activity increased by 2% during the same period (12%).

Putting the spotlight on Building & Construction, CareerJunction highlighted three key skills in this field that are currently in demand – mainly in Gauteng.

  • Project Engineer
  • Quantity Surveyor
  • Site Supervisor

The group noted that this field is one of the few professional fields where having a diploma or degree or qualification isn’t always a requirement, with 32% of candidates not recording any qualification for their positions.

However, 17% have at least a diploma, and 12% a degree.

Salaries for top-demand positions can vary:

  • Construction Manager from R39,127 to R53,352 per month
  • Electrical Technician from R23,076 to R33,799 per month
  • Construction Project Manager from R42,800 to R57,722 per month
