Eased load shedding this weekend – this is the new schedule

 ·30 Jun 2023

Power utility Eskom says it will ease load shedding this coming weekend, suspending outages for most of the day.

Stage 1 load shedding will continue until 16h00 on Friday (30 June). Thereafter, stage 3 load shedding will be implemented until midnight.

Load shedding will be suspended from midnight until 16h00 on Saturday, followed by stage 3 from 16h00 until midnight.

This pattern will be repeated until further notice.

Friday, 30 June

  • Stage 2: until 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Saturday, 1 July

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Sunday, 2 July

  • Suspended: 00h00 to 16h00
  • Stage 3: 16h00 to 00h00

Eskom said it will publish another update should any significant changes occur.

The group said that it has managed to reduce breakdowns to 14,374MW of generating capacity while the generating capacity out of service for planned maintenance increased to 5,003MW.

Over the past 24 hours, a generating unit each at Grootvlei and Kriel power stations were returned to
service.

In the same period, a generation unit each at Camden, Kendal as well as two generation units at Matla power stations were taken out of service due to breakdowns.

“The delay in returning to service a generating unit at Tutuka Power Station is contributing to the current
capacity constraints.

“Eskom teams are working around the clock to return generating units to service over the next few days,” it said.

The last three weeks of load shedding suspensions during the day have significantly impacted South Africa’s load shedding trendline, which is slowly starting to filter through to more positive longer-term trend data.

However, while South Africans are breathing a sigh of relief and enjoying the reprieve from full-day load shedding, energy experts have warned against complacency, noting that load shedding remains in full effect.

The government and Eskom have urged South Africans at large to use power sparingly.
