Inflation drops to 5.3% for April 2017

Annual consumer price inflation was 5.3% in April 2017, down from 6.1% in March 2017, Stats SA announced on Wednesday.

The consumer price index increased by 0.1% month-on-month in April 2017.

Food and non-alcoholic beverages decreased from 1.5 percentage points in March to 1.1 percentage points in April. The index increased by 6.7% year-on-year.

Transport decreased from 1.1 percentage points in March to 0.7 of a percentage point in April. The index increased by 4.6% year-on-year.

Miscellaneous goods and services decreased from 1.2 percentage points in March to 1.1 percentage points in April. The index increased by 7.3% year-on-year.

In April, the CPI for goods increased by 5.3% year-on-year (down from 7.0% in March), and the CPI for services increased by 5.5% year-on-year (up from 5.4% in March).
