Watch: Amateur footage captures low-flying jet over Joburg

 ·29 Jan 2016

A low flying fighter jet caused minor panic among residents in the north and west of Johannesburg on Thursday, due mostly to the noise the aircraft made.

The aircraft, believed to be a Gripen jet, traveled at a very low altitude, and in an uncommon flight path leaving residents to fear the worst.

It is believed that the aircraft was rehearsing for an Air Force Day celebration at Waterkloof Air Force Base in Centurion, on Friday (29 January).

Many astonished residents took amateur footage of the jet as it flew over numerous neighbourhoods, before returning to base in the early evening.

The South African Air Force are believed to have 26 Gripen aircraft in service.
