CareerJunction has released the findings of its latest salary index, showing the average salaries for over 100 jobs in 10 sectors across South Africa.
The CareerJunction Index is compiled exclusively for the South African workforce and HR/recruitment professionals.
Findings are based on actual salary offerings on the CareerJunction website (28,000+ jobs monthly) for the latest measurable period (2nd and 3rd quarters, 2014).
IT salaries in South Africa have increased by 20%, CareerJunction said.
According to the report, a senior project engineer can expect to earn the highest salary in the country, with a starting monthly salarly of R49,191, which can stretch to R67,234.
At the opposite end of the spectrum, a teller or cashier earns the lowest salary covered by the report, where workers can expect a starting market-related salary of between R4,100 and R5,775.
The report clearly shows that Gauteng pays higher salaries than the national average across all sectors, while the Western Cape pays less than the average in every sector except telecommunications and construction.
In terms of gender representation, the majority of sectors are dominated by men (6 out of 10 sectors). Women dominate in the finance, admin, and marketing sectors, while the sales sector sees an even split between men and women.
The salaries listed below are divided by sector and are listed alphabetically. We have highlighted the jobs with the highest and lowest averages; however, the salaries are listed as a range.

Admin, Office, and Support
Senior office managers are the highest-paid in this sector, fetching a salary as high as R30,121 per month. Tellers and cashiers can expect the lowest average pay at a low of R4,100.
Building and Construction
Senior structural engineers take the top spot in this sector with an average of around R64,800, while artisans fetch the lowest at R15,500.
As stated before, senior project engineers take the top spot in this sector, and all sectors, with a high average pay of R67,234. Auto engineers take the lowest average in the sector at R21,875.
The finance sector is split across many sub-categories, in which senior actuaries and financial managers take top spot with an average of over R52,000. Insurance admin and sales staff have the lowest average at R12,420.
Senior technical and business architecture developers as well as IT managers take the top spot in the sector, with average high salaries over R55,000. System and network admins take the bottom-most spot at R18,336.
Senior product managers can expect the highest average salaries at R46,799, while marketing assistants have the lowest at R11,631.
Manufacturing and Assembly
Senior plant managers are the highest paid in this sector, drawing a high average of R53,133 per month, while workers on the assembly line have the lowest pay at a low of R5,714.
Senior telecoms managers can expect to earn as much as R42,667 per month in this sector, while network planners have the lowest salary at R15,324.
Warehousing and Logistics
Senior managers dealing in logistics have the highest average at R51,167, while employees dealing with warehouse operations take the lowest spot, with R9,057.
