The SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) is scheduled to meet the DA to discuss Gauteng’s e-tolls in a hearing with the National Consumer Commission (NCC) on Wednesday (11 April 2012).

Democratic Alliance spokesman Neil Campbell said on Tuesday the meeting was a third attempt to get Sanral to sit around a table with the political party and the consumer body.

“The NCC has sent a stern e-mail to Sanral, requiring it to attend (Wednesday’s) hearing,” Campbell said.

If Sanral failed to do so, this would be viewed as “a wilful default” and the conciliation process would proceed in its absence, he added.

Sanral failed to appear at the first hearing, citing ignorance of the meeting as its reason. It cancelled a second meeting at short notice.

“The DA is looking forward to being able to highlight to the NCC aspects of the Sanral e-toll contract which we believe are not in the best interests of the consumer,” Campbell said.

Sanral did not respond when asked if it would attend Wednesday’s hearing.

In a statement last week, the agency said it was engaging with the NCC on various issues and complaints relating to its terms and conditions.

“This engagement is not only about the concerns of the DA but also those raised by other parties. We respect and take the concerns raised seriously,” it said in that statement.

Sanral said its ongoing engagement with the NCC would take into account the DA’s concerns.
