SABC’s Hlaudi Motsoeneng next in line to be made minister: report

 ·12 Mar 2017

The Free State’s ANC Youth League has officially backed former SABC COO, Hlaudi Motsoeneng, to take up a ministerial position, according to a report by the Sunday Times.

Provincial chairman, Makalo Mohale confirmed to the newspaper that Motsoeneng’s skills were too valuable to be wasted, which was why the league had formally nominated him to fill a vacant post in parliament.

“If he can’t go back to the SABC, then he must go to government,” said Mohle.

It is believed that Motsoeneng will be replacing Gugile Nkwinti as minister of rural development and land reform due to his radical stance on land reform.

Motsoeneng would not confirm where he would be heading next but did acknowledge it was not only the Free State’s ANC Youth League who had pushed for him to accept a senior governmental position.

“My support is not just locally, my support is even in the continent. Why? People in the continent talk about me a lot. They write about me. My support is not only from those who pronounce [ANC structures], there are many people. Even the kings and traditional leaders … including some churches.”

Motsoeneng currently still holds the position of group executive for corporate affairs at the SABC, despite a December High Court ruling stating that he would not be allowed to hold any position at the embattled state broadcaster.
