Here’s what is happening in and affecting South Africa today:
- Eskom’s problem is public enterprises minister Lynne Brown, says the power utility’s GM Khulani Qoma, who says that the minister has consistently lied, is completely incapable of doing her job, and answers to the Guptas. Qoma gave the explosive testimony to the portfolio committee currently probing state capture at the group. Brown has denied the claims.
- A possible coup in Zimbabwe is making waves in South Africa, with the local government saying it is keeping an eye on the situation. As chair of the SADC region, South Africa would have to intervene in the event of a coup. Reports indicate that the Zim military has taken control of several state facilities and detained ministers.
- ANC secretary general Gwede Mantashe says the party may intervene in three provinces where branches are fighting over nominations for the party’s elective conference next month. The Eastern Cape, North West and KwaZulu Natal are fighting internally over the nominations, with the deadline looming.
- The Gauteng SAPS has released local crime data, showing that murder in the province has increased by 6.7%, with attempted murder up 6.5%. The department singled out Midrand, Edenvale, and Mamelodi East police stations and the worst performing in the province, missing targets due to poor leadership. Lenasia police station was mentioned as the best.
- South Africa’s rand recovered on Tuesday as traders who sold the currency and bought the dollar in the previous session took profits on the fall to one-year lows, locking-in positions at cheaper levels. On Wednesday the rand was trading at R14.39 to the dollar, R18.91 to the pound and R16.96 to the euro.
