President Cyril Ramaphosa will deliver his ninth State of the Nation Address (SONA) at 19h00 tonight, 6 February.
The address will be streamed and broadcasted through several channels, such as news channels, radio stations, DStv, and live-streaming sources.
Ramaphosa’s address will be the first SONA of the Government of National Unity (GNU), with business leaders hoping that the President prioritises economic growth initiatives.
You can watch the SONA from the following sources:
- Parliament TV
- ENCA
- SABC
- DStv channel 408
The SONA will also be streamed live below:
Business Leadership South Africa CEO Busiswe Mavuso said that the President can use the SONA to consolidate confidence in the GNU, by committing to working with partners.
Mavuso said that the President should use his speech to focus on efforts to deliver 3% economic growth by the end of 2025, which will be enough to lower unemployment, increase investment and generate tax.
The 3% growth figure comes from the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) and is based on the country achieving reforms in four key areas:
- Electricity shortages;
- Logistics challenges;
- Water constraints; and
- Governance failures.
Mavuso also noted that Momentum is building towards South Africa hosting the G20 event later this year.
She said that the President can use SONA to reinforce the government’s commitment to leading the G20 agenda and supporting global policy shifts that enable growth in emerging markets.
South Africa’s leadership of the G20 has gotten off to a tough start, with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stating that he will not visit South Africa later this month over concerns surrounding the recently passed expropriation act.
US President Donald Trump also said that he would cut funding to South Africa over claims that the state is expropriating land and treating certain classes of people terribly.
Trump’s claims have been refuted by the South African government.
Looking beyond SONA, Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana will deliver the 2025 Budget Speech in two weeks, which Mavuso hopes will also focus on reforms to improve the business environment.
