Iconic South African Stadium getting R240 million facelift

 ·22 Jul 2025

The City of eThekwini has requested an extension to the overhaul and refurbishment of the Moses Mabhida Stadium, which was initially set for completion by December 2025.

The city announced the R240 million upgrade in October 2024, looking to expand that facilities within the stadium while also adding new tourist features and activities.

This includes a much larger viewing platform for visitors to capture the surrounding sights as well as a zip line and walking areas.

According to the city, the refurbishment programme is progressing well, but the committee in charge of the repairs has received a request for an extension to address urgent maintenance.

While the upgrades to the iconic stadium, which has been in operation for 15 years, have been phased to minimise disruptions to scheduled activities and public access, other urgent repairs also have to be made.

These include emergency rehabilitation of the concrete and roof structure and identified structural defects.

The repair work is focusing on the rehabilitation of steel, concrete, and roof structures, and addressing issues such as compromised mechanical joints, steel corrosion treatment, and the arch structure.

The city said that the first phase of repairs had already been completed, replacing the damaged roof membrane, applying steel corrosion coatings to exposed areas, replacing the arch cladding, removing corroded sky car infrastructure, and improving drainage systems for easier maintenance.

However, during the Community Services Committee meeting on 17 July, a request for an extension of the emergency remedial work contract at the stadium was noted.

The extension is subect to council approval, it said.

“The extension aims to ensure the continued progress of critical repairs necessary to maintain the structural integrity and safety of the facility,” it said.

“The committee acknowledged the importance of completing the remaining work within the revised timeline and emphasised the need for close monitoring to ensure that the project meets both quality and compliance standards.”

Once the renovations are completed, Moses Mabhida Stadium will adhere to international standards and will also be better equipped to host major events.

Some of the new features and upgrades include:

  • Enhanced viewing platform with a 60% larger floor area and a cantilevered glass floor for an “air walk” experience
  • Redesigned sky car with extended travel time and accessibility for individuals with disabilities
  • Upgrades to the Big Swing for improved access to the launch platform
  • New Zip Line ending at People’s Park for post-adventure refreshments
  • Compression ring walk offering panoramic views and sea-facing bungee jump options

The upgrades will also include improvements to the arch and bowl lighting with reinstated arch lighting and option for colour-themed lighting.

The city said it will continue to provide updates as the project progresses.
