Social grant change in South Africa this month
The deadline for South African social grant beneficiaries to replace their old SASSA gold cards with new Postbank black cards is 31 August.
About 280,000 individuals still need to switch to avoid potential payment disruptions, while over 1.5 million beneficiaries have already transitioned.
Postbank officials have emphasised that this process is only necessary for those using gold cards to withdraw cash or make purchases, and does not apply to those receiving grants directly into private bank accounts.
To avoid last-minute congestion and long queues, the bank urges recipients to visit distribution sites as soon as possible rather than waiting until the end of the month.
Beneficiaries can find their nearest collection point by using a specific USSD mobile code.
Postbank and SASSA are working to expedite the replacement of SASSA Gold cards to expand access through partnerships with major retailers and community stakeholders.
Partnerships with retailers such as Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, and Spar have established 39 replacement sites across the province.
Targeted communication through SMS, radio campaigns, WhatsApp messaging, traditional leaders, municipal councillors, and community structures has been implemented to reach beneficiaries before the August 31 deadline.
These initiatives aim to bring services closer to communities and improve access for grant recipients who still need to replace their cards.
Out of 280,000, there are currently 43,515 SASSA Gold Card holders in the Western Cape alone, who must replace their cards by the 31 August deadline.
Postbank has confirmed that this deadline will not be extended.
Postbank urges people not to wait until the last minute

Postbank Chief Commercial Officer Thami Cele told Talk Radio 702 that the bank has been communicating with beneficiaries since the start of 2026 through various channels, including TV, radio, and SMS.
With the deadline fast approaching, Cele stressed that individuals who have left this transition to the last minute need to act now, before the end of the month.
“This is due to the normal inertia of humans wanting to leave things to the last minute. If my card is still working, why not stretch it to the end?” said Cele.
“The problem with that is you don’t know what is going to happen at the end because you may have other emergencies, and then you will need your money.”
He explained that Postbank had previously handled up to 500,000 people per month, emphasising that it can serve everyone, but also noting that the bank does not want everybody to come on the last day.
Postbank has the capacity to handle the remaining volume, but wants to avoid a massive rush at the end of the month.
He highlighted that the transition applies only to those who actively use their SASSA gold card to withdraw cash or purchase goods.
It does not apply to beneficiaries whose grants are deposited directly into personal bank accounts, such as Capitec.
“What we are looking for is only those who are using the SASSA gold card to access their cash; those are the only customers and beneficiaries we are looking for,” he said.
He emphasised that if you get your grant through other banks, “you do not need to come forward and wait in a queue; that is unnecessary.”
“Before you leave the house, dial *120*355#; this will tell you the nearest site to your house,” explained Cele.
He explained that the system will ask users for their location and then send an SMS with a list of nearby sites where they can replace their cards.
