The top consulting firms to work for in South Africa

 ·15 Sep 2023

Every business cultivates an employer brand, which essentially characterises how they project their image in the job market.

Building a cohesive and persuasive brand is vital to attracting, hiring, and retaining the right talent, while fostering enthusiasm among potential employees.

Furthermore, a strong employer brand empowers companies to compete for top-tier talent and build a reputation of trustworthiness.

Contemporary studies have demonstrated that businesses with a robust employer brand enjoy a substantial advantage in enticing top-notch candidates for their job openings, ultimately contributing to their long-term success and growth.

Each year, the Top Employer Institute releases an annual list of the best workplaces from across the globe.

Headquartered in Amsterdam, the Institute is the definitive authority on workplace best practice, having certified an exclusive list of organisations in over 120 countries and regions worldwide.

They are seasoned experts on assessing everything from companies’ HR policies to culture, employee support and ESG initiatives.

This year, they have added Monocle Solutions to their elite ranking – a management consulting firm working as an execution partner for some of the most prestigious banks and insurance companies in South Africa and abroad.

Monocle is now one of only three consulting firms in the South African market with the honour of being recognised as a ‘Top Employer’, joining a select group of companies that have been bestowed the award.

To achieve the title, Monocle underwent a rigorous 6-month process of assessment, which evaluated the company across more than 250 criteria related to global human resources best practices.

Throughout this process, Monocle’s recruitment, development, performance evaluation, culture, diversity and inclusion, retention, and wellness strategies and practices were scrutinised and benchmarked against those of the best companies in the world.

“We are a people-centric business, and it is therefore imperative that we continuously benchmark ourselves against the highest standards and ensure that what we offer our people is aligned with the best in the world.”

“To be the only South African-based, homegrown, consulting firm to achieve the status of Top Employer is obviously a huge accolade and something to be incredibly proud of,” said Monocle’s COO, Willie Ehlers.

Monocle not only managed to match the achievements of world-leading institutions, but excelled in several core pillars:

1. Rigorous performance, career, training, and development offerings:

  • Dedicated internal training department
  • Study support for certifications and designations such as CFA, FRM & CIMA
  • Access to a large library of subject matter and research materials

2. Exceptional company culture and wellbeing value proposition:

  • Highly active and vibrant social company culture
  • Broad range of sporting and social clubs
  • Employee rewards and recognition programme

3. ESG principles integrated as part of the business strategy:

  • Financial support and volunteering at underfunded schools through Mission Monocle
  • Tertiary level bursaries for young black women through The Monocle Foundation
  • Environmental strategy implementation

Patrick Byrne, Monocle’s Senior Executive of People & Culture who played a key role in the company’s assessment process, suggested that these three areas, and the award more generally, ratifies Monocle’s position as a “worldclass employer of choice”.

While the company recognises the gravitas of this award, they remain forward looking and future focused.

“This is an incredible milestone, and it is another step in the journey towards becoming one of the most sought-after companies to work for.”

“Our future people strategies will be built around the lessons we have learnt thus far.”

“We want to continue to offer a place of work where employees can maintain a great work-life balance, foster life-long friendships and find fulfilment in their work. This will continue to be our commitment in the years to come,” added Ehlers.

In an increasingly competitive industry, the award is vastly beneficial. By investing in their people, culture and overall work environment, Monocle has cemented its position as a first-class, people-centric firm.

This ensures that consultants have the skills, knowledge, and motivation to thrive. The firm has seen rapid growth in recent years and continues to hire exceptional candidates who represent the top talent in the industry.

Monocle is on a continuous recruitment drive and is currently accepting applications for its prestigious 2024 Analyst Graduate Programme.
