MTN paves the way for Smart Cities in South Africa
MTN is excited about the opportunity to work with the South African government on implementing Smart City solutions nationwide.
This was a key takeaway from the GovTech 2023 conference, where MTN has had engaging conversations with key stakeholders about the possibilities smart technologies will provide and the role they play in digitally transforming South Africa.
MTN is proud of the projects that are already underway in certain municipalities and sees huge potential to deliver more smart offerings at scale in the future.
Smart meters
In particular, MTN sees great potential in the smart meter space. This is crucial in South Africa, as the government has confirmed it plans to install smart meters for remotely controlling South Africans’ geysers.
As geysers are among the most power-hungry appliances in any given home, the value of smartly controlling these cannot be understated.
MTN has the technological knowledge, resources, and experience to help the national government implement smart meters for geysers, and believes this is an important step towards securing a more stable power grid.
Partnerships are key
MTN is also dedicated to a range of other Smart City technologies, and believes the key to successful Smart City implementations is partnership with SMEs.
By combining the resources and experience of MTN with the local knowledge and access of SMEs, Smart City solutions can be delivered efficiently, affordably, and at scale.
MTN held valuable discussions with many SMEs at GovTech 2023, and it encourages companies with exciting Smart City visions, ideas, and skills to contact MTN about possible partnerships.

The future is bright
Following the conclusion of GovTech 2023, MTN is excited about the prospects of Smart City development in South Africa.
“We are looking forward to collaborating with the national and local government, and SMEs on Smart City projects in the months and years to come.” Says Eta Motlhabi, Head of National Department and Agencies, MTN Business.
