Why your first medical scheme choice could be one of your most important financial decisions

 ·3 Nov 2026

For many young professionals, medical aid can feel like just another deduction from a first salary. When rent, transport, debt repayments and everyday living costs compete for attention, it is natural to focus on the lowest possible monthly contribution.

But a first medical scheme choice can have longer-term financial implications. The right cover can make it easier to access care early, manage unexpected health events and avoid some out-of-pocket costs that arise when benefits, networks and scheme rules are not fully understood.

Rather than asking only, “What is the cheapest option?”, prospective members should actually consider, “What healthcare support am I likely to need now and what flexibility might I need as my life changes?”

Start with a realistic monthly budget

Affordability matters, but the monthly contribution is only one part of the equation. Before joining, speak to an adviser and understand potential additional costs, including co-payments, savings contributions, benefit limits and expenses that may not be covered.

An option with a lower contribution may still result in higher costs if a member pays for services outside the benefit structure or uses providers outside a designated network. Even for those with existing cover, there is value in reviewing what the option provides, not only what it costs each month.

Think about the healthcare you are likely to use

Young people may assume they don’t need much healthcare cover, particularly if they are generally healthy. However, everyday needs can include GP consultations, medication, mental-health support, dental or optical care and medical advice when illness or injury occurs unexpectedly.

Good questions to ask yourself when considering cover are:

  • Whether you take regular or chronic medication
  • Your access to a GP, pharmacy or virtual medical advice
  • Whether you have preferred doctors, hospitals or pharmacies
  • The preventative-care benefits available
  • Potential life changes, such as a new job, travel, marriage or starting a family

Healthcare needs do not remain the same throughout adulthood. Choosing cover that is relevant now, with the flexibility to reassess as circumstances evolve, can be a more sustainable approach.

Check where and how you can access care

Network options can offer good value, but they may limit the hospitals, doctors or pharmacies a member can use. Checking these details in advance can prevent frustration and unexpected costs later.

Digital care is also becoming an important consideration for people balancing busy schedules. Hello Doctor, available to eligible Momentum Health members, provides 24/7 telephonic access to doctors, allowing members to seek guidance without travelling to a practice or waiting for an appointment.

Momentum Health says Hello Doctor consultations have increased by 634% since 2021, reflecting growing demand for convenient access to healthcare guidance. For first-time members, this can offer a practical first point of contact when they are unsure whether they need further treatment or an in-person consultation.

Prioritise prevention, not only treatment

Healthcare cover should not only be considered in the context of illness. Preventative benefits such as screenings, health assessments, vaccinations and wellness support, can help people understand their health earlier and take action before a concern becomes more serious.

“Hospitalisation remains the largest area of expenditure in the medical scheme market, which is why prevention and early intervention cannot be treated as optional extras,” says Damian McHugh, Chief Marketing Officer at Momentum Health. “A sustainable healthcare model must help people act before a health concern becomes a more serious and often more expensive, event.”

“We believe people should be empowered to take practical steps towards better health in ways that are accessible, relevant and meaningful to them,” says McHugh. “When health support is convenient, understandable and rewarding, people are more likely to build habits that last. These everyday choices help create healthier people, stronger businesses and a more resilient future.”

Momentum Health’s 2027 offering includes enhancements to HealthReturns, with expanded opportunities for employers to support employee wellbeing through HealthSaver contributions and other health initiatives.

Before making a final decision, ask about waiting periods, exclusions, late-joiner penalties, chronic-medicine formularies and pre-authorisation requirements. Understanding the details upfront can make a meaningful difference to both the member experience and potential costs.

For first-time members, medical aid is not simply a purchase for when something goes wrong. It can be a practical tool for staying well, accessing care earlier and building greater financial resilience as life changes.
