Hackers target Anglo American websites
Hacktivist group Anonymous recently claimed to have breached the security of two Anglo American websites – angloplatinum.com and angloplatinum.co.za – and published sensitive information online.
In a post on the “Operation Green Rights” blog, the group claimed that Anglo American’s action against a fight for indigenous people and polluting the environment are behind this hacking.
Numerous files, which contain usernames and passwords and investor names with personal details, were published online.
Anglo American’s media manager, Mpumi Sithole said that they take all apparent breaches of data security very seriously, and their IT security team have carried out a thorough investigation.
“It appears the breach took place at a third party host server. Information from a number of companies’ websites was accessed,” said Sithole.
“The information related to Anglo American Platinum was more than 8 years old and related to legacy website files that were no longer in use. We have taken action to prevent such a breach recurring.”
