Takealot makes a loss on R27,000 Google Glass

Takealot CEO Kim Reid says that the online retailer has sold 12 sets of Google Glass in South Africa – and quipped that it made a loss on each one.

Reid was speaking at the 2014 uAfrica eCommerce Conference in Midrand, when he made the remark.

Takealot has announced on its website in mid-August that it has a limited number of the Google Glass Explorer Edition wearable computers available for R26,999 ($2,500).

This followed Google’s announcement in April 2014 that it would let users outside its Glass Explorer programme buy the device.

According to reports at the time, Google was to sell Google Glass to these users for $1,500 – though this excluded sales taxes, import duties, and shipping.

Google Glass features a 5 megapixel camera capable of 720p video recording, and 16GB storage (of which 12GB is usable).
