You need to visit “the most unforgettable” bar in South Africa

 ·18 Dec 2016

Travel magazine, Travel + Leisure has listed the 17 most unreal and unforgettable bars in the world, including one from South Africa – where you’re served inside an iconic baobab tree.

The Sunland ‘Big Baobab’ can be found in Modjadjiskloof in Limpopo, South Africa and is famous internationally for being the widest of its species in the world.

The Sunland baobab has a circumference measuring in at 47 metres, reaching a height of 22 metres.

One characteristic of the baobab species is that it starts to hollow out once it reaches over 1,000 years old – and the Sunland Baobab is carbon dated at well over 1,700 years old.

As the widest baobab in the world, the hollowed out Bib Baobab has created a network of caves, which is now home to one of the world’s most unique bars.

According to the Van Heerden family who owns the farm the tree is located on, the tree has shown signs of human habitation from as far back as the 17th century.

The hollow was turned into a bar in 1993, and can accommodate 15 patrons at a time.
