While youth unemployment remains high in South Africa, there are several entry-level jobs for graduates that offer salaries from R6,200 for diploma holders to R24,545 for degree holders.

The Pnet Job Market Trends Report for June 2026 outlines several entry-level opportunities for graduates in South Africa, particularly in technical and engineering fields, which offer the highest earning potential.

Electrical Engineers in the engineering sector have the highest earning potential. This role requires a degree.

Graduates can begin as Junior Electrical Engineers or Electrical Engineering Graduates, earning a monthly salary between R11,682 and R24,545 (CTC).

In the Information Technology (IT) sector, which closely follows engineering in terms of starting salary offerings for diploma holders, Software Developers have the highest earning potential.

Entry-level roles, such as Junior Software Engineer or Entry-Level Full Stack Developer, typically provide monthly earnings ranging from R12,508 to R23,488.

In the finance sector, bookkeepers can earn decent salaries. Finance graduates looking to develop foundational skills can pursue roles such as Junior Accounts Clerk or Assistant Bookkeeper, which can lead to monthly salaries ranging from R9,375 to R18,357.

Systems and Network Administrator roles in the Information Technology sector also require a degree and include roles such as Junior IT Administrator and Entry-Level IT Hardware Support, with expected monthly salaries from R10,690 to R14,750.

Financial accountants in the finance sector typically need a degree and include positions such as Trainee Accountant or SAIPA/SAICA Clerk, with salaries ranging from R9,395 to R13,815 per month.

While technical and financial positions provide the highest salary potentials, various other sectors also offer valuable talent pipelines with reliable starting salaries for graduates:

In the marketing sector, graduates with a diploma can enter roles such as a Sales and Marketing Intern or an Entry-Level Marketing Assistant, with monthly salaries ranging from R8,900 to R12,120.

In the business and management sector, graduates can pursue a Recruitment Consultant pathway, which requires a degree and includes positions such as Research Assistant, Junior Recruiter, or Recruitment Intern, with starting salaries ranging from R8,100 to R12,020.

In the admin, office, and support sector, the Human Resources Assistant role serves as a stepping stone into corporate support.

This position requires a diploma and includes titles such as HR Intern or HR Administrator, with salaries ranging from R6,200 to R8,083 per month.

South Africa’s universities

South Africa is home to over 20 public universities, with tuition fees varying according to each university’s policies, the programme type, and the course duration.

According to the latest ranking from Times Higher Education for 2026, 13 of these universities are recognised among the world’s top tertiary institutions.

This ranking evaluates the global performance of research-intensive universities and includes 2,100 institutions across 108 countries and regions.

The ranking is based on 18 carefully calibrated performance indicators that assess various aspects of an institution, including teaching, research environment, research quality, industry engagement, and international outlook.

The ranking showed the University of Oxford as the best university in the world, ranking in first place for the ninth consecutive year since 2017.

The University of Cape Town remained the best university in South Africa, ranking 164th in 2026, a significant improvement from 180th in 2025.

Universities that are not in the top 300 are not ranked individually; instead, they are categorised into ranges.

For local universities that stay within the same range, it can be challenging to determine whether they have improved or declined in their overall ranking.

Stellenbosch University is ranked in the 301-350th place again for 2026, where it has been placed since 2024.

The University of the Witwatersrand slipped from the 201-300th group in 2025 to the 301-350th group in 2026.

The University of Pretoria improved its ranking from the 601-800 range in 2025 to the 501-600 group in 2026.

Universities such as Nelson Mandela University and Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University are ranked in the 1201-1500 range, while Durban University of Technology is ranked in the 1501+ range.

Attending local universities is the most cost-effective choice for South Africans seeking quality education.
