How to reach the top: Vodacom CEO

Vodacom CEO Shameel Joosub’s advice to ambitious individuals who want to move up the corporate ladder is simple: If you are asked to do x – do x, y and z.

Joosub had a meteoric rise at Vodacom, having joined in March 1994, and quickly moved up the ranks to take the position of Vodacom Service Provider Company MD in September 2000.

He was appointed as Vodacom South Africa MD in April 2005, and served in this position until he took the reins at Vodafone Spain in April 2011.

In September 2012 Joosub was appointed as the CEO of Vodacom Group at the age of 41.

Speaking on an interview on CNBC Africa, Joosub said that his success is partly based on always doing more than what was expected of him.

“If you are asked to do x – do x, y and z. You really have to push. You have to make yourself heard and show people that you can do more,” Joosub said.

“You have to build it in such a way that you cannot be ignored. If you are doing that you will gain success.”
