MTN adds Skrill to Mobile Money e-wallet

MTN Group has partnered with global online payments company Skrill to facilitate payments through the mobile operator’s Mobile Money e-wallet.

Through the partnership, Mobile Money users will now be able to use funds from their mobile wallets to purchase goods and services online from a brands integrated into the Skrill network.

MTN Mobile Money users in Ivory Coast and Rwanda will be first to use the service, when the ‘Pay by Skrill’ service is introduced in September.

As of June 2014, MTN Mobile Money has over 18.4 million customers in 15 countries.

The service enables users to perform local and international money transfers, make utility payments and purchases.

Skrill’s worldwide payment network direct payment processing via 100 payment options in 200 countries and territories and 40 currencies.

According to Skrill, the partnership should “provide impetus for MTN’s remaining 200 million mobile subscribers to embrace mobile payments.”
