Vodacom trialling tap and pay
Vodacom is trialing a number of different near field communications (NFC) solutions, including tap and pay apps.
It follows a report in the Financial Times that parent company Vodafone is launching a mobile payments service in the UK in August.
The service, in conjunction with Visa, will enable contactless payments via special SIM cards embedded with NFC technology.
Vodafone would team up with loyalty initiatives, with the wallet also able to pay for travel on London Underground. The operator is expected to open its service up to banks, the FT said.
Vodacom spokesperson, Richard Borman told BusinessTech of the group’s position in SA. “We’re running trials on a number of different NFC solutions including tap and pay applications. We’re also testing other applications such as security / access.”
“South Africa is perhaps a little less accepting of the technology than places like the UK where the Oyster Card is used by millions of people, but we do see some very interesting possibilities in the near future,” he said.
Vodacom is also currently working on a series of new multi-channel service and sales platforms, specifically in the digital space, as it seeks new avenues for revenue growth.
One such project would see Vodacom customers being able to purchase products directly through social media, taking advantage of the social relationship between customers and the brand.
It could potentially see customers being able to purchase products directly via Twitter, using the social network’s hashtag feature.
