 ·17 Nov 2014

Telkom’s latest subscriber figures show that its active mobile subscriber base increased 26.7% to 2,024,495 over the past year.

The group reported its financial results for the six months ended 30 September 2014, on Monday (17 November).

The company’s mobile operations contain 1,595,130 pre-paid subscribers, and 429,365 post-paid subscribers.

Telkom also increased the blended average revenue per user (ARPU) of its active mobile subscribers by 22.4% to R71.99, up from R58.81 a year ago.

The group’s mobile voice and subscriber revenue increased 54.7% to R348 million, up from R225 million in September 2013.

This growth can be attributed to an increase in the number of active mobile subscribers, and the increase in blended ARPU, Telkom said.

“We managed to reduce the EBITDA loss of our Mobile business by 50.7% by increasing service and subscriptions revenue (excluding equipment sales) by 48.0%,” it said.

On the mobile data front, it said: “In line with our strategy to focus on data, we offered attractive data deals which led to an increase in data subscribers and a 39.3% increase in mobile data revenue to R422 million.”

During the reporting period, Telkom said it constructed an additional 17 mobile base stations, with 2,473 mobile sites integrated, up 10% from 2,238 in 2013.

LTE sites integrated was up 46.4%, to 1,275, from 871 sites in 2013.

Telkom advised that it remains in discussions with MTN South Africa regarding the potential extension of its existing roaming agreement.

The deal would include bilateral roaming and outsourcing of the operation of Telkom´s radio access network.
