How much money car dealerships charge for labour in South Africa
New research conducted by Lightstone Consumer shows the current labour rates charged at franchised dealers in South Africa.
The automotive intelligence group conducted a survey spanning 897 car dealerships across 37 vehicle brands in South Africa.
The study accounts for the Warranty Labour Rate, Maintenance/Service Plan Labour Rate and the Retail Labour Rate.
It found big disparities among vehicle companies, with labour rates among marquee brands reaching as much as R1,000 per hour, with Chinese and Indian imports charging as low as R300 per hour.
Lightstone’s data showed that Land Rover has the highest average retail labour rate of R814, followed by BMW subsidiary, Mini, with an average rate of R812. Also in the JLR group, Jaguar is the third with an average hourly labour rate of R802.
On the other end of the spectrum is Chinese maker, Great Wall Motors (GWM), at an average hourly labour rate of R445, Chery (R451), and Indian based manufacturer, Tata, at an average rate of R456.
